Hollow Metal Doors & Frames

Hollow Metal Doors in Buffalo, NY

Formed steel commercial doors and frames for exterior entrances, stairwells, mechanical rooms and any Buffalo opening that has to take abuse and stay secure. Standard sizes stocked on the shelf, not ordered in.

Hollow metal commercial doors hung in steel frames with closers, panic bars and vision lites

Steel commercial doors supplied and installed across Western New York

A hollow metal door is built from formed steel face sheets bonded to an internal core and hung in a steel frame. It is the default door for commercial construction because nothing else combines security, fire performance and abuse resistance at the same price. If a Buffalo building has an exterior service door, a stairwell, a boiler room or a loading area, it almost certainly has hollow metal.

We supply hollow metal doors and frames as a matched assembly. Door, frame and hardware quoted together so the prep, handing and finish actually line up on install day. Standard sizes are stocked, which means a common opening can be handled in days rather than the six to eight weeks a special order typically takes.

We sell to general contractors bidding door packages from plans, to property managers replacing a single kicked-in service door, and to facility teams who need a rated stairwell assembly that will pass inspection. There is no minimum order.

Door Configurations

Four standard glass configurations

Every hollow metal door starts as a flush slab. What changes is how much glass goes in it, driven by whether the opening needs light, visibility or maximum security.

Flush Steel Doors

No glazing. Maximum security and the best fire performance. Standard for exterior service doors, stairwells, mechanical rooms and storage.

Square Glass Lite

A small vision lite near the top, typically 12″ × 12″. Lets staff see through before opening without giving up much security.

Rectangle Glass Lite

A narrow vertical lite, commonly 6″ × 27″. The usual choice for corridors, classrooms and back-of-house doors.

Half Glass Doors

Glazing across the upper half of the door. Used where an opening needs real daylight. Entries, offices and reception areas.

Buying Guide

How to spec a hollow metal door

Five things that decide whether a steel door opening works for a decade or becomes a recurring service call.

1. Start with the opening, not the door

The most common and most expensive mistake is ordering a door before confirming the rough opening, the wall type and the handing. A 3′0″ × 7′0″ door is only correct if the frame it hangs in is square and the wall can carry it. We measure before anything is ordered.

Handing matters more than people expect

Left-hand reverse and right-hand reverse doors are not interchangeable once hardware prep is machined. Getting handing wrong turns a stock door into a custom order.

How to check handing in ten seconds

Stand outside the opening. If the hinges are on your left and the door swings away from you, it is left-hand. Photograph the hinge side and send it with your enquiry.

2. Pick the gauge for the abuse, not the budget

18-gauge steel is standard for interior openings with normal foot traffic. 16-gauge is thicker and far more dent-resistant, and belongs anywhere carts, pallet jacks or delivery traffic pass through. The price difference is small next to replacing a dented door two years in.

3. Confirm the fire rating before you shop

If the opening sits in a rated wall, the door, frame, glass and hardware all need matching labels. A rated door in an unrated frame is not a rated opening, and a fire marshal will catch it. Check the wall rating first, then buy the assembly to suit.

4. Schedule hardware with the door

Hardware prep is machined into the door and frame at the factory. If lockset function, hinge count or closer position changes after the door is made, you are looking at field modification or a replacement. We schedule hardware per opening before anything ships.

5. Ask what is actually in stock

Special-order doors commonly run six to eight weeks. Standard sizes on a shelf can go out the same day. If your opening is a common size, that difference is the entire project timeline, so ask before accepting a lead time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hollow metal doors: frequently asked questions

A hollow metal door is a commercial-grade door built from formed steel face sheets over an internal core, hung in a steel frame. It is the standard door type for exterior openings, stairwells, mechanical rooms and anywhere a building needs security, durability or a fire rating.

Yes. Standard sizes are stocked on the shelf rather than ordered in, so common openings can be collected or delivered instead of waiting the six to eight weeks typical of a special order.

A knock-down frame ships in pieces and assembles inside the opening, which suits drywall partitions and retrofit work. A welded frame arrives as one rigid welded unit, which is stronger and squarer, and is preferred for masonry openings, exterior doors and high-abuse locations.

In-stock standard doors start around $450 for the door alone. A complete opening with frame and hardware typically runs $900 to $2,000 supplied, and $1,400 to $3,500 supplied and installed, depending on rating, gauge and hardware.

Yes. Hollow metal assemblies are available with UL labels from 20 minutes up to 3 hours. The door, frame, glass and hardware all have to carry matching labels for the opening to be compliant.

Yes, with no minimum order. We supply single replacement doors for property managers and full door packages priced from plans for general contractors across Western New York.

Often yes. If the frame is square, solid and the correct profile, a slab-only replacement is cheaper and faster. We check the frame during the free measure and tell you honestly whether it is worth keeping.
